  13.     would expect that a new product announced in conjunction with a new
  14.     operating system would support its available features to take
  15.     advantage and complement each other.

  51. line?  We certainly understand that some must remain there, but it
  52. looks like no attempt was made at all to help reduce the size of
  53. PCLP below the line.

  57. memory are for the CAChe at the Server and for a VDISK.  While there are
  58. several PCLP parameters which can be used to reduce memory utilization,

  60. information on these, please reopen this item.  The Redirector module,
  61. which is used to access the Server contains 20-24K of code, but may
  62. require up to 64K of memory - depending on the parameter options you
  63. choose.

  110. maintenance release to 3270 Workstation Program version 1.1,  will
  111. be the only version supported with DOS 4.0.

  171. 1.  How does DOS 4.00 differ from 3.30?
  172.     *   Over  30  new  and enhanced  commands and  utilities
  173.         provide DOS 4.00 with significant improvements  over
  174.         DOS  3.30 while  remaining upwardly  compatible.  It
  175.         supports  the  same PC-PS/2 hardware systems  except
  176.         for  PCjr.  DOS  4.00 is the first  release  of  DOS
  177.         which  carries  a program warranty  with  associated
  178.         defect   service   for   one   year   from   today's
  179.         announcement.
  180.         Other Highlights of the DOS  4.00  enhancements over
  181.         3.30 include:
  182.         -   Support  of  large  hardfiles  greater  than  32
  183.             megabytes  in  a   non-partitioned  manner  that
  184.             allows a single file to be as large as the media
  185.             provided.  3.30  requires partitioning  of large
  186.             disks  into  logical drives of  32 megabytes  or
  187.             less.
  188.         -   A  new  DOS  Shell  provides  group,  file,  and
  189.             directory   services  that   are   user-friendly
  190.             alternatives to the command line.  3.30 does not
  191.             provide  this  menu-driven  file  organizer  and
  192.             application selector  which  introduces the user
  193.             to an OS/2 like presentation manager.
  194.         -   DOS   4.00  supports  exploitation   of  memory,
  195.             supplied by IBM Expanded Memory Cards,  Options,
  196.             or  emulation  (See  today's   announcement  for
  197.             details), above 640KB by applications written to
  198.             the  Lotus/Intel/Microsoft  4.0  Expanded Memory
  199.             Specification (EMS). 3.30 requires the  function
  200.             of  the  IBM  Workstation Program to support the
  201.             IBM Expanded Memory Cards.
  202.         -   The DOS installation procedure (SELECT) has been
  203.             enhanced  with full screen  interactive menus to
  204.             aid the user in configuring  the richer function
  205.             set provided by DOS 4.00 versus 3.30.
  206.         -   Video/graphics  support  has  been  enhanced  to
  207.             provide printing of graphics screens, additional
  208.             video mode settings, and display of more than 25
  209.             lines of text not provided by DOS 3.30.
  210.         -   For   world  wide  users,  DOS  4.00  has   been
  211.             translated into 11 languages, and  three English
  212.             versions   (U.S.,   U.K.,   and  Universal)  are
  213.             available.  DOS  4.00  has been enabled to allow
  214.             separately available translation supplements for
  215.             Asia    Pacific    languages,    and    provides
  216.             right-to-left  support  to separately  available
  217.             Arabic  and  Hebrew   supplements   that   allow
  218.             generation  of files  in  these  languages.  New
  219.             keyboards for  U.K., France,  and Italy  are now
  220.             supported.
  221. 2.  Is there a list of  OEM  application programs  that have
  222.     been tested for compatibility with DOS4.0?
  223.     *   No  list  of   compatible  OEM   programs  has  been
  224.         compiled.   You   must   check  directly  with   the
  225.         manufacturer.
  226. 3.  What are the  implications  of  programs  performing DOS
  227.     version checks?
  228.     *   Some  applications require or check  the  version of
  229.         DOS  that  it is running under  and  some  require a
  230.         specific verion  of  DOS  to run.  Some applications
  231.         are  checking for  versions  of DOS > DOS3.3  but  <
  232.         DOS4.0 and since there are  no  versions  of DOS  at
  233.         this level, the applications may not work correctly.
  234. 4.  Is  DOS  4.00 offered  on both  3.5 inch and  5.25  inch
  235.     media?
  236.     *   Yes,  but  in  separate  packages.   DOS  4.00  3.5"
  237.         version  contains  two (2) diskettes to support PS/2
  238.         purchases.  DOS 4.00 5.25" version contains five (5)
  239.         diskettes for prior owners  of  DOS 1.0 through  DOS
  240.         3.30 or for new purchasers of 5.25" systems.
  241.                      Memory Requirements
  242.                      -------------------
  243. 5.  How much memory does DOS 4.00 require?
  244.     *   DOS 4.00 base requires  approximately 62KB of memory
  245.         on  a  PC AT, and this  will  vary  based  on  other
  246.         configurations.  Using  the   DOS   Shell  Extension
  247.         requires a minimum of 256KB of memory.
  248. 6.  Do application programs still have 640KB under DOS4.0?
  249.     *   Programs that are written  to  take advantage of LIM
  250.         4.0,  or  expanded  memory,  will have  greater than
  251.         640KB  available.  Otherwise,  application  programs
  252.         still have the full 640KB available.
  253. 7.  Has the resident part of DOS 4.0 increased?
  254.     *   DOS  4.0 resident storage size has increased due  to
  255.         performance  enhancements.   Programs   which   were
  256.         executable while using DOS 3.3 may not  fit into DOS
  257.         4.0  640KB   program   environment.  The  additional
  258.         resident growth is  due to the following performance
  259.         improvements:
  260.         -   Greater than 32MB hardfile support.
  261.         -   10,000   buffers  can   be  specified   in   the
  262.             Config.Sys file.
  263.         -   Fastopen keeps track of the last file opened and
  264.             searches  the directory table for a file  before
  265.             searching the hard disk.
  266.         -   Look-Ahead-Buffers   allow    multiple    sector
  267.             processing  when  sequential  data  is  read  or
  268.             written to a disk.
  269.         -   System  buffers  may  be  placed   in   Extended
  270.             Memory.
  271.         -   Share.Exe  automatically  installed  on  systems
  272.             with  hard disks greater than 32MB in size.
  273.         In comparing the resident size of DOS 3.3 to that of
  274.         DOS  4.0,  the  following  chart  will  some  system

  290. 8.  What  is  the  method  for allocating partitions greater
  291.     than 32MB in DOS 4.0?
  292.     *   In  DOS 4.0, the 16-bit FAT is still used, but there
  293.         is  an  increase in allocation  size  of sectors per
  294.         cluster.  Using files from DOS  3.3  on  DOS 4.0  is
  295.         possible, however files created on large  disks with
  296.         DOS 4.0 cannot be used on DOS 3.3.
  297. 9.  What  happens   when   using  the  DOS  3.3  unformatted
  298.     partitions or logical drives with DOS 4.0?
  299.     *    A  change was  made  to DOS 4.0 to protect the user
  300.         from performing  I/O  to an unformatted partition or
  301.         logical drive.  If the  user is running DOS 4.0  and
  302.         tries to access the partition, a critical error with
  303.         the  "Abort,  Retry,   or   Fail"  message  will  be
  304.         received.  The  problem arises when a  user has been
  305.         performing  I/O  to an  unformatted  partition under
  306.         DOS 3.3 and  then  upgrades  his  system to DOS 4.0.
  307.         The  user will  either  think that  DOS  4.0  has an
  308.         error because  he/she was  able  to use the hardfile
  309.         under 3.3,  or  that  the hardfile  has  "gone bad".
  310.         Also, when looking at an  unformatted  logical drive
  311.         under  DOS  4.0  FDISK,  the  system  type  for  the
  312.         unformatted  logical  drive will  be  be  listed  as
  313.         "UNKNOWN".
  314.         To resolve this problem, the user should BACKUP  the
  315.         unformatted drive while running  DOS 3.3.  Next they
  316.         should format  the  drive  using DOS  3.3  and  then
  317.         RESTORE the partition  from  the  previously created
  318.         BACKUP.  Now,  when  DOS  4.0 is  installed  on  the
  319.         same system, the user will be able to access all the
  320.         information  on   that  drive  without  receiving  a
  321.         critical error.
  322.                           DOS Shell
  323.                           ---------
  324. 10. What is the DOS Shell?
  325.     *   The DOS Shell provides an alternative to the command
  326.         line prompt A> user interface.  It  provides the DOS
  327.         command  services  via  interactive   displays   and
  328.         windows within the  displays  to support day  to day
  329.         tasks.  It allows  start-up of applications,  access
  330.         and  processing of files,  and  hardcopy  output  of
  331.         processed   data.  Help  information   is   provided
  332.         relevant  to  the  task at  hand.  These actions are
  333.         accomplished  by straight  forward  selections  from
  334.         easy to  use menus  using  either  a  mouse  or  the
  335.         keyboard.  The  Shell  will  run in  either text  or
  336.         graphics  mode  and   is   similar   to   the   OS/2
  337.         Presentation Manager.  Installation of the DOS Shell
  338.         is optional.
  339. 11. Is the DOS Shell based on Microsoft Windows 2.03?
  340.     *   No.  It  is  based on several years of research into
  341.         user-friendly command processing to provide a Common
  342.         User Access  (CUA)  method of organizing  files  and
  343.         display of information for optional  selection.  The
  344.         IBM Fixed Disk Organizer program provided a base for
  345.         this enhancement.
  346. 12. What screen modes are supported by the DOS 4.0 Shell?
  347.     *   The screen modes supported by  the SHell  are: 3, 7,
  348.         10, 11, 12
  349.                       EMS Support

  351. 13. What is EMS?
  352.         *   DOS  4.00 now provides  operating system support
  353.             for those developers who write applications that
  354.             require additional  memory  above  the DOS 640KB
  355.             limitation in order to  run  or  provide  higher
  356.             performance.  The  applications  must be written
  357.             to  the programming  interfaces  required by the
  358.             public  domain   Lotus/Intel/Microsoft  Expanded
  359.             Memory Specification  4.0, which is known as LIM
  360.             4.0 EMS.  Memory above  640KB  is then addressed
  361.             through a combination of a DOS 4.00  EMS  device
  362.             driver  and IBM memory cards  that  contain  the
  363.             additional memory.  See today's announcement for
  364.             details on EMS memory options.  80386 processors
  365.             (PS/2 Models 70 & 80) emulate these memory cards
  366.             using their virtual paging capabilities.
  367.             In  addition to  supporting these EMS  dependent
  368.             applications,   DOS   4.00  can  utilize   these
  369.             cards/emulation  to  provide  memory relief  and
  370.             associated performance improvement for  specific
  371.             DOS functions.

  427. The IBM Disk Operating System (DOS) Version 4.00 is the latest release of
  428. the single tasking operating system for the IBM Personal System/2 and
  429. IBM Personal Computer families.
  430.  
  431. TCSEE 88G will review the many enhancements provided by this release in
  432. technical detail, including additional support for IBM hardware, expanded
  433. memory support, and several new and enhanced DOS commands. There will be
  434. particular focus on installation procedures and the new user shell.
  435.  
  436. PC DOS 4.0 provides the user with a new full-screen user interface
  437. installation program and user shell.  The installation program guides the
  438. user through the setup of his system, including the AUTOEXEC.BAT and
  439. CONFIG.SYS files.

  441. :p.The user shell is a menu driven user interface which conforms to
  442. many of the Systems Application Architecture (SAA) and Common User
  443. Access (CUA) specifications. The DOS shell may be tailored to
  444. individual's needs, and provides access to a command prompt and an easy
  445. to use file system. The user shell may be run in graphics or in
  446. text mode and may be run with the keyboard, a mouse, or both.
